Sonamarg  means ‘the meadow of gold’ and with snow-capped mountains set against a spectacular blue sky, it is as close to heaven as it can get. Around 90 Km from Srinagar,      Sonamarg is located in Ganderbal district on the road from Srinagar to Ladakh in the state of Jammu & Kashmir in India. If you want to avoid too much snow, June to September is the right time to visit. These photographs here were taken with a Nikon D800 and Zeiss glasses.

Sonamarg, located at an altitude of 2,800 m above sea level is surrounded by breathtaking glaciers and serene lakes. Sonamarg is the base camp for many trekking expeditions. The major treks passing through various mountain lakes such as Gangabal, Vishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Kishansar has its base at Sonamarg.

The valley remains closed for all tourists from December on wards because of heavy snowfall and avalanche in these territories. The road to Sonamarg opens in April when visitors can walk through the snow carpeted valley. However, the best time to visit this place is between the months of April – June.
